Zine Project 1

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

Artist's Statement

This project was really important to me, as well as fun. My greatest passion is helping those with mental health issues, and with this zine, the goal was to shed light on some of the most intense feelings that people with mental health issues go through. Through my art, I hoped to normalize these feelings and bring them to the forefront.

At first, this project started out as a representation for some of the symptoms of schizophrenia. That idea shifted as I thought more deeply about the project and decided that it wasn’t my place to voice how people with schizophrenia experience their lives, because I don’t experience it that way.

As the project evolved, I realized that I could look inwardly at different emotions and feelings and things that I felt should be talked about. The piece that I hoped would spark a conversation is the brain with the pills background. This was designed to highlight the problem that we have in America of throwing pills at mental health issues instead of talking about them and finding solutions. These pills then destroy peoples’ lives and are not solutions.

It is my hope that with this zine, people don’t feel so alone, and understand that other people feel these emotions, go through them and that its okay to talk about our hardships with one another, and even if it feels like we’re alone, we never really are. Hopefully this zine can inspire some more human connection in a world that has become so isolated.

thanks for looking
